Launching Cybernetics at ANU

The Australian National University Chancellor Hon Julie Bishop and our Director Genevieve Bell led on 29 November the launch of the ANU School of Cybernetics and the opening of the refurbished Birch Building. Ngunnawal traditional custodian and knowledge holder, Uncle Wally Bell, joined them for the ceremonial ribbon-cutting.

Day 1 | 29 November#

Crowd — Over 200 people from within and beyond ANU and Australia joined our launch program on 29 November.

Day 2 | 30 November#

Dsncing with Drones — Day 2 of our launch celebrations is comprised of an event series. We started the day with two discussions on data and social outcomes with the Paul Ramsay Foundation and dancing with drones with the Australasian Dance Collective.

tech to scale 1 — More events underway! In this event, participants joined a workshop to explore the link between the history and future of building complex technological systems. #AustralianCybernetics.

Multisensory 1 — In a session, artists featured in the exhibition guided visitors through their installations to engage in the experiences, explain the creative process and respond to questions.

Our Director Genevieve Bell welcomed guests to the launch of a new professional network co-convened by the School, the Cybernetic Practitioner Network.

AI Stories — Participants in an engaging workshop that aims to unpack stories about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ask questions that help develop a more nuanced and diverse perspective for understanding AI systems.

Podcast — A full house for our live podcast recording for ABC Radio National's 'Science Friction'.Joining program host Natasha Mitchell are our Director Genevieve Bell and a panel composed of our Associate Director for Education Dr Ben Swift, Research Fellow Hannah Feldman and alumnus Matthew Heffernan.
