Dr Sergio José Rodríguez Méndez is an interdisciplinary scholar and professional software engineer and architect with 27+ years of experience in industry and academia. He is an experienced full-stack system developer, data specialist, project manager, and I.T. consultant.

He holds a PhD in computer science from the EECS IGP of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, a Masters in information and communication technologies (Magna Cum Laude) from the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC), and a Master in Finance (with honours) and a Bachelor in Computer and Systems Engineering (Magna Cum Laude) from Universidad Radael Landivar (URL).

In industry, he co-founded a Guatemalan software company, leading the development of e-banking and middleware systems, and later served as a Senior Consultant on governmental financial Business Intelligence platforms. He has deep expertise across the software development life cycle, the Web technology stack, and languages including Python, Java, C/C++, JavaScript, C#, SPARQL, and SQL, and has been a guest speaker on Semantic Web, Web technologies, and Software Engineering.

He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at URL and USAC, lectured Pervasive Computing at NCTU, and was a Research Assistant at Academia Sinica’s Institute of Information Science in Taiwan.

Since joining ANU in 2019, he has been a course convener and lecturer, supervises student projects and HDR students, and serves as principal architect and technical lead in his research. His current focus is automating the construction of knowledge graphs from heterogeneous data sources through the KG Construction Pipeline.

Areas of Expertise: knowledge graphs, ontology engineering, linked data and semantic web, data science, information retrieval, machine learning, natural language processing/understanding, brain-computer interface, internet of things: sensors and actuators, cloud/fog/edge computing, software engineering and architecture.
