Researcher. Philosophiser. Dork.#

As a Research Officer in the School of Cybernetics, Lewis investigates a range of topics under the direction of the School Director, whilst also being a useful set of administrative/logistical hands for whoever needs it. Lewis possesses a commanding and philosophical curiosity, courtesy of a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Philosophy in Science) and a Bachelor of Languages (majoring in Japanese) at ANU. He also has varied experience in government, parliamentary, and academic roles, as well as video game arcades and axe throwing instruction!

Recently, Lewis worked on the ANU Grand Challenges initiative, providing administrative support for four challenges – Our Health in Our Hands (OHIOH), Australian Social Cohesion: Exploring New Directions (ASCEND), Indigenous Health and Wellbeing, and Humanising Machine Intelligence. Additionally, he supported researchers in the John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR) and The National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH) prepare applications for external grant/fellowship funding.

A certified Japan-fan and proud nerd, Lewis is completing his master’s thesis (through the ANU College of Asia and Pacific Studies) on the topic of social-media influenced tourism within Japan, and may be seen reciting lines of classical Japanese as a member of the ANU Za Kabuki troupe. If you ask him about Japanese (pop) culture, history, politics or tourism, you’d better set aside an hour in your diary! Outside of work and study, Lewis can most often be found taking photos of Telstra Tower and other Canberra sites, and riding his bike around Lake Burley Griffin (albeit slowly).
