With Feedforward, the ANU School of Cybernetics aims to create a platform for us to better prepare for hopeful futures.

Traditionally, systems rely on feedback loops; we adjust based on new information, then evaluate how well those adjustments align with the desired goal and then adjust from the new information. ‘Feedforward’ seeks to prepare, instead of react.

“If negative imagery about a feared future can produce positive action, what will positive imagery about a desired future produce?” Elise Boulding, sociologist

Feedforward comprises five papers that position the cybernetic approach to futures, present complementary tools developed to support this work, and cover the specific role of hope in effecting systems change.
