Dr. Xuanying Zhu is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the School of Cybernetics and a Research Scientist at Seeing Machines, specializing in Human-Machine Interaction and Machine Learning.

With a Ph.D. from the ANU, she focuses on enhancing human-machine interaction through AI and human factors research. Dr. Zhu’s expertise spans machine learning, physiological signal processing, user experience, and affective computing. Her work includes innovative projects on safe driving behavior detection and mitigation, human-drone collaboration, and the detection of atypical affective states such as depression and deception.

With an interdisciplinary expertise in human-machine interaction and machine learning, she recognizes the potential of cybernetics to inform the development and enhancement of human-machine collaboration. Her research explores how to design systems that are not only technologically advanced but also ethically sound and socially responsible, contributing to the creation of more equitable and sustainable futures.

When she is not doing any of the above, you may find her playing the piano on the street or at aged care facilities, recording wild birds’ singing to merge into her music, or snorkeling to watch and feed stingrays.

Areas of Expertise: Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Human-Machine Interaction.
