Journalist. Advocate. Hip-hop stan#

Makoi Popioco is the Engagement and Impact Coordinator at the School of Cybernetics. Telling stories is at the core of his work across the media, civil society, and public policy. Makoi has spent over a decade as a journalist in the Philippines working for CNN and other outlets. He reported on disasters, terrorism, human rights, transportation, and Asian geopolitics. For his reporting on road safety, Makoi was awarded two international fellowships by the World Health Organisation and the International Center for Journalists (US).

He also co-founded a non-profit that used virtual reality to push for policy reform in disaster management. He brokered and managed grants and cross-industry partnerships with some foreign governments, INGOs, and MNCs.

He finished his Master of National Security Policy at the ANU and currently completing an executive management certification at the UNSW Business School.

He bops to late 90s/early 2000s hip-hop songs to start his day and falls asleep to old-school R&B music at night.
